DEWEY LAKE QRP BACKPACK TRIP

It was nice weather on Saturday, October 16, 2004, after a rainy spell.  On the spur of the moment (so to speak) the three hams above decided to go on the last backpack trip of the season.  The 11th, 12th, and 13th essentials (radio, antenna, and antenna launcher) were stowed away into the packs.

Dewey Lake was chosen as the destination.  Dewey Lake is about 3 miles SE of Chinook Pass on the Pacific Crest Trail.  The lake sits in a bowl and hikers must descend approx 700 feet from the above ridge.

Once our campsite was chosen and our tents were set up... we erected two antennas.  KR7W's TV twin lead 20/40 meter dipole and AC7QN's 75 meter vertical.

Contacts were made with many hams participating in the Virginia QSO party, the 75 meter Whiskey Group, and some DX on 20 meter CW.

The trip begins at Chinook Pass on Highway 410.

After about a mile down the Pacific Crest Trail... Dewey Lake is spotted from top of the ridge. The trail decends about 700 feet to get to the lake.

After quite a bit of rain... the fungi fourished in the shadows.

Rich KR7W with his 'super slingshot' shoots a line in the trees for antennas.

Chuck AC7QN pulls the mason's line to hoist the antenna up high.

It was a cold dark night at Dewey Lake. Temperatures dropped way below freezing. Rich and Chuck bask in the sun as it rises over the east horizon.

The Mt Rainier National Park's Natchese Loop trail was taken on the way back to the car. Pat, KD7TRC in forground.
